Development of the standards was a robust, collaborative process involving contributions from all aspects of the multi-stakeholder membership of the CRSB. A robust development process began with an indicator development committee comprised of CRSB members and subject matter experts who worked together to develop the draft standards. Industry and member feedback processes and two rounds of public consultation were undertaken for both standards during initial development of the program in 2017.
A 60-day public comment period was issued for the initial drafts, and a secondary 30-day consultation followed on revised drafts. A total of 250 comments were received during consultations – all comments were reviewed, and responses are included in the links below.
The CRSB has committed to reviewing and updating the CRSB Certified program every five years, including the standards.
Our latest program update was published in December 2023.
As part of that first five-year evaluation of the program, an in-depth review of each indicator in the program's Standards for sustainable beef production and primary processing was completed, guided by the expertise of the CRSB's Framework Committee.
Proposed changes to the Standards focus on strengthening indicators through monitoring and demonstrating progress, keeping in mind economic and technological realities to adoption, and specific indicators that align with the 2030 Canadian Beef Goals.
See the aggregated feedback and CRSB responses from the five-year review public consultations below.
