Certification Process
What is Assurance?

Assurance refers to the rules and requirements for assessing compliance with a program, so that all stakeholders - partners, supply chain, and consumers know, understand and trust the results.

CRSB Certified program’s comprehensive and rigorous Assurance Protocols for Certification Bodies, Clients and Oversight Body details the program requirements for our evaluation and certification processes to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Steps to becoming CRSB Certified
Navigating the certification process can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to make it simple.

Our certification process ensures your beef operation meets all the requirements for CRSB Certification, the standard for beef sustainability in Canada. Whether you are a beef producer or processor, the path to certification is the same.  Review the program documents to get started, and explore the steps involved to becoming certified below.

The Process:

Select a CRSB-approved Certification Body of your choice

Certification is carried out by third party CRSB-approved Certification Bodies. Program participants select the Certification Body of their choice, depending on what is most appropriate for their individual operation, and considering other programs in which they may already participate.

Certification is maintained through a basic 5-year cycle that includes on-site audits, records assessments and self-declarations.  The Certification Body conducts a risk assessment based on an operation's initial audit findings and assigns an appropriate audit cycle.

Certification is conducted according to the CRSB Assurance Protocols.

See Certification Bodies below

On-site Certification

  • Complete any applicable pre-certification training required by the Certification Body
  • Complete an on-site verification audit
  • Certification Body will review the report from the auditor
  • Addresses any corrective actions identified during the audit within the prescribed timeline, if applicable

Certificate Issued

  • Certification Body issues certificate, including certificate #, effective and expiry date, type of certification
Participate in CRSB Certified Supply Chains

The benefit of the CRSB Certified program is linking cattle and beef from CRSB Certified Operations from the farm gate to the consumer’s plate. Accomplishing this takes a village, with contributions from participants at every step of the supply chain.

Make the most of your CRSB certification by giving your cattle a chance to qualify for CRSB Certified supply chains, which may also provide financial benefits from CRSB sourcing partners.

Be sure to take these important steps:
1

Maintain your certification

2

Consent to sharing information with CCIA for the purposes of Chain of Custody tracking

3

Submit cattle birth dates (individual animals or grouped) to the Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) for all animals born on your operation

4

Submit move-ins for all cattle movements in the CLTS.

Certification Bodies

Certification of beef producers and primary processors according to CRSB Standards is completed by CRSB-approved Certification Bodies.

Operations seeking certification may select the Certification Body of their choice, depending on what is most appropriate for their individual operation. Operations may wish to select a Certification Body based on other industry programs they may already participate in.

View the available options below to find the Certification Body that is right for your operation. These will be updated as additional Certification Bodies are approved by the CRSB.
